Muller Van Severen presents two new collaborations at Milan Design Week

Barcelona Design x Muller Van Severen

The collaboration between Barcelona Design (BD) and Muller Van Severen blossoms from a shared legacy steeped in Surrealism, sculpture, and architecture. Muller Van Severen have designed a cabinet series called 'Bridges' and a new version of the Pillow sofa for BD.

Bridges

As one project inspires the next, a seamless bridge is forged between their creative realms. Following their design for the Bitossi vase collection Onda, Muller Van Severen designed a series of cabinets.

Imagine a cabinet transcending its function to embody sculpture, even architecture, through the manipulation of its base. Three different units with the same dimensions in terms of footprint, but varying in height and each with a distinct cutout, lay the groundwork for exploring the essence of volume. Elevating the body in three unique ways, these openings sculpt three distinct silhouettes, supported by legs that dance with space and light. A bridge emerges beneath the units, connecting one foot to another, while freeing room for light to playfully escape between the legs.

In this narrative of connection and transformation, the cabinet evolves into a pedestal, a sculpture, even a miniature building. It becomes a canvas for architectural experimentation, where light and space intertwine in a captivating dance. With each new perspective, the lines blur between furniture and art, challenging conventions and inspiring new possibilities.

Pillow Sofa

Muller Van Severen’s Pillow sofa modular arrives at BD. Initially designed by Muller Van Severen for KASSL Editions, the Pillow sofa has been improved into a new playful and modular system for BD. The independent pillows are crisp and richly hued, perfect for puzzling together to create a fusion of comfortable seating arrangements. Edges curve smoothly and combine into an array of environments where style and grace meet a plush expression of form. One where cushions mix, match, adapt, and grow, wherever they are.

Barcelona Design

In 1972, a group of young architects and designers from Barcelona started BD with the intention of producing and marketing furniture and objects for their own projects—with complete creative freedom and with design criteria that were different, in terms of shape and function, from the sector norms.

Muller Van Severen x Zanotta

Muller Van Severen has designed a cabinet series called 'Z24' for Zanotta.

Z24

Muller van Severen's design for Zanotta unites the Belgian duo's vision with the esteemed craftsmanship of the iconic Italian brand. Both Zanotta and Muller van Severen have a rich history of quirky designs that push the boundaries of conventional furniture aesthetics.

At the heart of the Z24 Cabinet lies its defining feature: a harmonious repetition of triangular doors, meticulously arranged to create a captivating rhythmic landscape. This intricate design not only adds visual interest, but also facilitates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, imbuing the cabinet with a sense of dynamic depth and dimension.

As light dances across the surface, casting intricate patterns that seem to breathe life into the otherwise static facade, the Z24 Cabinet transforms its surrounding space.

Despite the diversity in sizes, colours, and angles, each cabinet harmoniously coexists, forming a cohesive family united by design. This harmonious unity further accentuates the cabinet's dynamic presence, underscoring its transformative power within any interior setting.

Zanotta

Founded in 1954, Zanotta is recognized as a major player in the history of Italian design. Guided by the intuition and extraordinary entrepreneurial ability of its founder Aurelio Zanotta, the company initially focused on the production of sofas and armchairs, going beyond the artisan tradition of the upholsterer's workshops - to which the production of upholstered furniture normally referred - and moving towards "cultured" design, establishing itself among the companies that wrote the first significant pages in the history of Italian design.Since the 1960s it has thus conquered the international scene thanks to products that are emblematic for their formal innovation and technological research supported by the continuous evolution of the quality of materials and production processes.

In April 2023 Zanotta was acquired by Cassina and became part of the Haworth Lifestyle Design group along with other prestigious brands Cappellini, Ceccotti, Karakter, Poltrona Frau, Luxury Living, JANUS Et Cie, Luminaire and Interni.

Muller Van Severen

Muller Van Severen was founded in the early Spring of 2011. With both Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen being artists, it’s natural that their collections sit somewhere between design and art. Muller Van Severen have been on an inspired quest for sculpturally interesting furniture objects, always including the space around it, and characterized by a careful research into their shared passion for art, architecture and materials. At the same time Muller Van Severen’s designs appear to be created almost intuitively and with total effortlessness. It looks as if the designers draw with crayons in space.

After winning countless awards and collaborating with prestigious museums (such as Vitra Museum, Centre Pompidou and Musée d'Art Decorative Paris) and galleries (Galerie Kreo, Andreas Murkudis, Tim Van Laere Gallery) worldwide, Muller Van Severen is considered to be one of the most image-defining European design teams of today. Their creations are globally identified in both private homes and public spaces.
