Three new presentations at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, dedicated to Saul Steinberg, Léon Spilliaert, and the contemporary art scene

Save the date: press conference — Wednesday, May 21 at 10:30 AM

Starting May 21, 2025, three new rooms — including a new permanent room — will be accessible to visitors at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (RMFAB). One will feature The Americans, a major work by Saul Steinberg; another will be dedicated to the artist Léon Spilliaert, in dialogue with works of art on paper; and the third will focus on contemporary and modern artists.

2025 is shaping up to be a year of transition: no new in situ exhibitions on the programme, but a complete and gradual overhaul of the permanent collections of the Old Masters Museum (main building, rue de la Régence). The aim is to re-create a journey from the 15th to the 21st century, which will mark the return of artworks from the 19th to the 21st century to the visitor's journey through the main building. A detailed plan of the new route will be presented in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, and to kick-start this change, the museum will be offering three new presentations that reflect its ambition to focus more closely on its own collection and to showcase the results of its restoration efforts on key masterpieces. It also signals a broader commitment to a more diverse program — in terms of gender, identity, nationality, social issues, and the dialogue between old, modern, and contemporary art.
