SAVE THE DATE: Hans Op de Beeck Solo Exhibition at Almine Rech – September 10

From September 10 to November 7, Almine Rech Brussels is pleased to present Hans Op de Beeck’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Titled Vanishing Point, the exhibition features a collection of new sculptures.

In these particularly complex and turbulent times, marked by widespread belligerence and escalating geopolitical conflicts, Op de Beeck wishes to reflect on how, alongside our daily activist and critical commitment to a better world, we can — without becoming cynical — continue to constructively call for attention in art for an essential, empathetic, contemplative, and poetic reflection on our humanity.

In his exhibition Vanishing Point, he explores the complex relationship between culture and nature in an eclectic, anachronistic, and multicultural manner, as is customary in the historical tradition of the always highly diverse Wunderkammer. The works contain countless references to rituals, early science, oral storytelling traditions and visual language, fossilized natural elements, animals, mysticism, planetariums, and astronomy, as well as allusions to our contemporary digital imaging and semantics.

Additionally, Op de Beeck reflects on both human microorganisms and macro-structures such as the architectural and urban planning structures of cities. The latter, incidentally, also led him — surprisingly — to works with an abstract modernist feel.

The artist strongly believes that genuine empathy and dedication to the small things in life can make a difference in our immediate environment and are keys to a better world.

About Hans Op de Beeck

"Multi-disciplinary artist Hans Op de Beeck creates interworlds. Suspended between past and future, fiction and reality, his works sound out a mirage-like contemporary universe and a sensory vertigo where the familiar rubs shoulders with the strange. From installation to sculpture, from video to animated film, from short stories to painting and drawing, from photography to sound material, the media he employs seem to converge on the definition of a topos: a mental theatre that projects the viewer into a reflexive social and cultural experience, the intimate thinking of the human condition."
—Eva Prouteau, art historian and critic
