New light artwork by Daan Roosegaarde rises in unique location in Genk

Starting Thursday, September 26, Thor Park, a former mining site in Genk where technology, nature, and culture converge, will be home to the permanent artwork LICHTSPOREN (Traces) by renowned Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde. This intimate light installation embodies the power of nature—the energy that sustains us both literally and metaphorically throughout our lives. LICHTSPOREN are glowing stones that explore the earth’s hidden energy while honoring Genk’s rich mining history.

“LICHTSPOREN is an ode to the energy of nature".
— Daan Roosegaarde

Daan Roosegaarde is celebrated for his innovative designs in public spaces that seamlessly blend art and technology. He describes LICHTSPOREN as a connection between the breath of the past and the pulse of the future, creating a dance of light that symbolizes the earth's boundless energy. The artwork pays homage to the region's mining history while inviting us to envision a future where humanity lives in harmony with energy.

As night descends, the light artwork emerges among the trees. Crafted from a unique blend of light-sensitive blue pigment and stone, the illuminated trails symbolize the hidden energy potential of the earth. They serve as a reminder of the mine shafts, representing the scars of the past, while also reflecting the vibrant communication of nature within the forest and the connections we forge as humans.

Thor Park: A Hub for Innovation

Thor Park in Genk has transformed from a site associated with coal exploitation to a space devoted to education, entrepreneurship, and harmonious coexistence with nature. "This site is focused on the future, where innovative ideas pave the way for a sustainable and greener tomorrow. The light artwork contributes to the ongoing development of Thor Park as a gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park," stated Mayor Wim Dries.

The permanent installation of LICHTSPOREN at the heart of Thor Park is no coincidence. "This former mining site tells the story of Limburg and Genk like no other. Here, past and future, nature and culture, industrial heritage and cutting-edge technology converge amidst the natural beauty of Hoge Kempen National Park. This unique location prioritizes intimate experiences over mass tourism, offering visitors a profound connection to the essence of the place, whether they hail from Genk or beyond," remarked the Flemish Minister for Tourism.

"This light artwork perfectly intertwines innovation and nature, two cornerstones of our beautiful province. Not only does it enhance the appeal of Thor Park and the Hoge Kempen National Park for visitors, but it also provides an engaging way for all ages to learn about the distinctive character of this location. I highly recommend it to everyone," added Jo Brouns, Minister for Employment, Economy, Innovation & Agriculture.

An Experiential Gateway

LICHTSPOREN is part of a broader initiative to expand the leisure offerings at Thor Park. "This light installation is integral to our ongoing development of Thor Park as a gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park. In 2025, we aim to elevate the visitor experience further by introducing an interactive guide featuring augmented reality, virtual reality viewers, and immersive films," explained Tourism Alderman Karel Kriekemans. "These digital innovations will strengthen the connection between Thor Park and the Hoge Kempen National Park, inspiring visitors from near and far to explore this remarkable destination."
