Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens presents a project by Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle

Fence Mirage - 18 May – 17 August 2025

Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens presents a project by Brazilian artist Cinthia Marcelle (born 1974 I, Belo Horizonte; lives and works in São Paulo), an artist whose work explores systems of entropy and disruption to challenge existing structures and hierarchies. Through minimal interventions and readily available materials, her installations engage closely with the socio-economic contexts of both natural and urban environments. Her gestures are intended to stimulate collective action and resonate with the context in which they are situated. The artist regularly reconfigures her own past works into new constellations.

At MDD, Marcelle presents a progression of Fence Mirage (2005), one of her earliest and most emblematic works. Revisited and recontextualized, the installation blurs the boundaries between inside and outside, between art and architecture. It reflects the lines of the museum while raising broader questions about institutional frameworks and beyond: inclusion and exclusion, limits and thresholds—both spatial and social. Through this new configuration, Marcelle affirms her commitment to a rigorous visual economy and formal precision, offering a quiet yet powerful meditation on structure, control, and resistance.

Cinthia Marcelle has received international recognition for her poetic and politically resonant practice. She represented Brazil at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017) and has exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Secession in Vienna, MACBA in Barcelona, and the São Paulo Biennial. Her work is held in major public and private collections around the world, and she is widely regarded as a key figure in contemporary Brazilian art.
