Curated: A collectible design exhibition at Mix Brussels, curated by Lionel Jadot

The newly opened hotel Mix Brussels announces the first edition of Curated, a collectible design exhibition open to all, featuring the works of 44 designers and curated by Lionel Jadot (who was just awarded Designer of the Year 2024 by Maison & Objet). This unique event transforms the former Royale Belge into a vibrant space for designers, artists, collectors and architects to exchange and share their work.

The three-day gathering is taking place from Friday, October 11, to Sunday, October 13, 2024. The exhibition is open and accessible to everyone - both hotel guests and visitors - giving a rare opportunity to discover a diverse range of collectible design in the unique setting of Mix Brussels. In the remarkable 70s building, where the old and the new coexist, Curated will introduce the creations and projects of designers and artists curated by Lionel Jadot, the (interior) designer who envisioned the renovation of Mix.

Curated serves as a platform for showcasing collectible design and fostering connections among designers, artists, and the public. In a landscape increasingly influenced by globalization, this event highlights the importance of locality and craft, inviting both Belgian and international audiences to engage in discourse around the future of design.

"When I'm in a hotel, I like to be projected into something that surprises me. Today, the customer is ready to accept different, unique furniture lines rather than products from the other side of the world"
— Lionel Jadot, curator of Curated

The event will include a vernissage and various opportunities for guests and participants to interact with the exhibited works, all set within the shared spaces of Mix. On the occasion, cocktails, brunch all day and several food options. will be served in both the Romeo Bar and the Joule Eatery.

Attendees will experience an environment where each piece of art or design not only stands independently but also interacts with the architectural features of the hotel. From expansive open areas to intimate rooms, the exhibition will showcase how functional art can enhance our surroundings.

Curated will present a variety of works, including ceramics, woodworking, and experimental materials. Notable participants include Boquita De Cielo, a ceramics studio based in London; and Studio mo-mo, a French creative studio of artisans and artists. Belgian artists such as Thibeau Scarcériaux, Dirk Meylaerts, and Nathalie Van der Massen will also contribute their interpretations of craft and design.

Lionel Jadot's approach to curating this event aligns with the vision of Mix Brussels—a multifaceted space that combines a 180-room hotel, restaurants, a food market, co-working areas, and wellness & gym facilities, all designed with a focus on creating a true community. The building, formerly known as La Royale Belge, has been transformed into a destination that merges hospitality, art, and design.

After the renovation of the Royale Belge building, a masterpiece of 1960s brutalist architecture, Lionel Jadot gave carte blanche to the designers of Zaventem Ateliers (a former industrial wasteland of 6000M2 that is used as a place for artisans, artists, designers and set designers to meet, discuss, create and produce) to work on the project under his direction - the first time the group have worked all together. Employing a horizontal approach with no middlemen, firmly anchored in the building’s aesthetic, Jadot, his team, and the designers of the 25 studios that (literally) surround them, along with 27 other Belgian designers, set to work to create furniture, light fixtures, sculptures, tapestries, curtains, accessories and more, all crafted specially for this unique location and bring out the unique atmosphere that defines Mix.

About Lionel Jadot

Born in Brussels in 1969, Lionel Jadot is a self-taught interior designer who likes to define himself as an ‘adventurer’. Hailing from a renowned family with five-generations of Belgian furniture makers (the Vanhammes), Jadot spent most of his childhood in his father’s workshop, producing his own creations from scrap wood and leather offcuts. This upbringing forged his appreciation for craftsmanship, artisanal work, and repurposed materials. It also informed his work ethic and creative vision: experimenting, recycling, skirting traditions by marrying disparate elements, while also maintaining an integrous approach and a close connection to his local community.

Over the past two decades, Jadot has established himself as a disruptive entrepreneur in the world of design. His studio designed bespoke interiors for private and hospitality clients, including Mix (Brussels, Belgium), Café Flora (Brussels, Belgium), Food Society (Lyon & Paris, France), Wolf food market (Brussels, Belgium) and Atsukan Japanese spa at the Jam Hotel (Brussels, Belgium).

About Mix

Mix is a multifaceted project led by interior architect and designer Lionel Jadot. It encompasses a 180-room hotel, three restaurants, a food market, a co-working space, an auditorium, and a health club. Housed in a large functionalist building in Brussels, Belgium, Mix transforms the space into a vibrant destination. The building, formerly known as La Royale Belge, was originally commissioned as the headquarters for an insurance company. Under Jadot’s direction, Mix promises to offer a unique and memorable experience, blending hospitality, dining, work, sport and wellness within its expansive premises.

Atelier Lionel Jadot provides a new approach to hospitality design by integrating over 50 local craftsmen and designers in its conception. Belgium-based functional art therefore constitutes the very identity of this unique experience, and becomes the first project of its kind, emphasising the importance of coming back to locality and craft in our globalised world.

About Zaventem Ateliers & The Book

Founded in 2018 at the initiative of Lionel Jadot in a former paper factory on the outskirts of Brussels, Zaventem Ateliers has already sparked a lot of interest over the course of its short but dense history. Early on, Jadot began selecting designers to join Zaventem Ateliers, gradually assembling a group of handpicked makers who have grown into a unique collective, a cohesive and influential entity which shows no signs of slowing down.

Since the fall of 2019, the modern-day guild of Zaventem Ateliers has been granted its very own scribe: Jérôme Hoppe, then an anthropology student, chose to write his master's thesis about this community of creative studios. He then stayed on to continue in his role as privileged observer of the ZA adventure. Combining an analytical and global outlook based on (very) long-term presence with informal and specific interviews, he paints a personal picture focusing on the human dimension of the team, inviting us to meet the family who inhabit this old factory.

Juliette Amigues, a French bookbinder and editiorial designer living in Brussels, designed the book together with Jérôme Hoppe. The duo of photographers formed by Stan Huaux and Jeremy Marchant have also joined in this game of observation and long-term contact with their subject, which led them to integrate into the daily life of the workshops, capturing lived-in shots of the intimacy of creation.
