August welcomes guests to its urban gardens, a hidden oasis in the heart of Antwerp

August in Antwerp opens its urban gardens, a hidden oasis in the heart of the city. Tucked away behind the walls of the former Augustinian convent, these secluded gardens provide a lush and peaceful setting for lunch, dinner, or aperitifs. This season also marks the arrival of a new culinary offering by chef Pieter Starmans.

A new culinary direction

Chef Pieter Starmans, who led the restaurant when August first opened, has returned. His cuisine, which was awarded 15/20 by Gault&Millau at the time, now sets the tone for a new culinary chapter at the restaurant.

This renewed approach places freedom and enjoyment at its core. Rather than a fixed tasting menu, guests are invited to dine at their own pace, choosing from an à la carte selection or a three- or four-course menu.

The summer menu is deeply rooted in seasonality, celebrating local produce, regional terroir and authentic flavours, with vegetables playing a central role. Freshness, elegance and lightness define the chef's culinary vision. Ingredients are selected at their peak and showcased through a refined yet approachable style of cooking.

Alongside these seasonal creations, several signature dishes remain on the menu, including the iconic Dame Blanche and the bone-in rib, both of which have become part of August's culinary identity.

Artisanal craftsmanship remains at the heart of the project. Sauces, preparations and desserts are made in-house, with meticulous attention to detail and an uncompromising focus on ingredient quality.

A secret garden in the heart of Antwerp

Hidden behind the walls of the former Augustinian convent that houses august are two lush urban gardens. During the summer months, they become a natural extension of the restaurant, offering an exceptional setting for lunch, dinner or an aperitif, away from the bustle of the city.

Nestled amongst abundant greenery, the tables create a peaceful and intimate atmosphere : an unexpected retreat in the heart of Antwerp. This verdant oasis is an integral part of August’s identity, where heritage, gastronomy and the art of living come together in a unique setting.

The bar also plays a central role within the property. Hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy cocktails, sharing dishes and timeless classics either in the impressive chapel, with its soaring ceilings, or on the terrace overlooking the gardens.

Much more than just a hotel

Housed within a carefully restored former Augustinian convent, August has become a destination in its own right. The hotel features 44 rooms and suites, a restaurant, a bar set within the former chapel, a spa, and two tranquil urban gardens.

With this new culinary direction and the opening of its gardens for the summer season, August further strengthens its position as one of Antwerp’s most inspiring destinations, where hospitality, gastronomy and heritage come together in a singular setting.
