ArtOnPaper celebrates its 10th edition with 56 participants and a diverse programme dedicated to art on paper

From 2 to 4 October 2026, ArtOnPaper celebrates its 10th edition at The Sheds at Tour & Taxis in Brussels. The fair welcomes 50 galleries and 6 guest projects, showcasing the richness and diversity of art on paper, from 19th-century drawings and post-war Belgian art to contemporary installations, prints and editions. A programme of talks with artists, curators, publishers and art market professionals will run throughout the three days of the fair.

Following a sabbatical year in 2025, ArtOnPaper returns under the direction of General and Artistic Director Emmanuelle Indekeu. This anniversary edition builds on the history of a fair that began as an experimental initiative by Michel Culot and the late Pierre Hallet (1953–2021), before establishing itself at BOZAR in 2015. This year, ArtOnPaper moves to a new venue at Tour & Taxis, with the continued support and organisation of VO Group.

Here, paper is much more than a support for preliminary studies. It is a space in which to record ideas, construct images, experiment with techniques and give existing materials a new life. This versatility forms the starting point for five sections: Old Masters, Main Section, Emergent, Solo and the new Edition section.

The five sections invite visitors to discover different periods and artistic approaches side by side. Old Masters focuses on historical works, while the Main Section presents modern and contemporary art, and Emergent is dedicated to young galleries. Solo places a single artist at the centre of each presentation. New to this edition, Edition highlights prints, editions and other forms of art produced in multiples.

Ten presentations to look out for

1. Thomas Deprez Fine Arts — a journey through Belgian art on paper
Old Masters

Brussels-based Thomas Deprez Fine Arts presents works on paper from the 19th and 20th centuries. The selection begins with François-Joseph Navez, a pupil of Jacques-Louis David, and moves through Romantic landscapes and more intimate scenes to Art Nouveau and the interwar period. It concludes with a still life by Jean Brusselmans. The work takes on added resonance during the fair weekend: on 2 October, BOZAR opens the first Brusselmans retrospective since 1980.

2. Bernier / Eliades — generations of artists in dialogue
Main Section

Bernier / Eliades brings internationally established artists Tony Cragg and Thomas Schütte together with Dionisis Kavallieratos, Martina Quesada, Stefan De Jaeger and Christiane Löhr. The presentation explores how artists from different generations and countries work with paper, through techniques ranging from pencil and watercolour to gouache, pigment and mixed media.

3. Maurice Verbaet Collection — a closer look at post-war Belgian art
Main Section

The Maurice Verbaet Collection focuses on its principal field of collecting: Belgian art after the Second World War. Featuring works by Fred Bervoets, Jan Saverys, Hugo Claus, Pierre-Louis Flouquet, Auguste Tambour, Vic Gentils and Michel Matthys, among others, the presentation shows the importance of paper as a space for artistic research and experimentation.

4. Chiquita Room — the many worlds of Pieter Laurens Mol
Solo

With spaces in Barcelona and Brussels, Chiquita Room dedicates a solo presentation to Dutch artist Pieter Laurens Mol. Original works and editions from different periods offer an insight into a practice in which time, scale, space and chance are recurring themes. Mol’s conceptual work combines a sharp play on meaning with a subtle, at times absurdist, sense of poetry.

5. LAGE EGAL Curatorial Projects — João Freitas gives packaging a new life
Solo

Brussels-based Portuguese artist João Freitas works with discarded materials from the packaging industry, including composite paper and Tetra Pak packaging. For his presentation with LAGE EGAL Curatorial Projects, he works into their surfaces until the successive layers of paper, glue, foil and aluminium become visible. In doing so, he transforms materials intended for rapid consumption into surfaces that carry traces and memories.

6. Wouters Gallery — Julien Saudubray draws beyond the frame
Solo

Brussels-based Wouters Gallery presents a solo booth by French artist Julien Saudubray, who lives and works in Brussels. A black-and-white drawing covers the walls of the booth from floor to ceiling, with four framed abstract colour drawings installed in front of it. Saudubray explores how pigment and material interact, and how an image can continually evolve during the process of making.

7. The Paddocks — Katerina Moschou explores what can grow together
Solo

Greek gallery The Paddocks presents work by Katerina Moschou developed from her residency in spring 2025. At its centre is the process of grafting: joining two plants so that they continue to grow as a single organism. Moschou uses this process as the starting point for works in which paper, translucent materials, pencil, graphite, photographic prints and woodcuts are layered over one another. The connections and interventions remain visible.

8. SYBIL — two approaches to drawing
Emergent

SYBIL brings together works on paper by Carlotta Bailly Borg and Mia Walker. Each artist moves in her own way between figuration and abstraction, image and material. The presentation is conceived as a visual dialogue: visitors can consider the works individually while also discovering the new relationships that emerge between them.

9. Kubus und Kugel — when an edition becomes a unique work
Edition

In the new Edition section, Berlin gallery Kubus und Kugel presents work by Markus Lüpertz, Mojé Assefjah and Armin Boehm. Their prints demonstrate the wide-ranging possibilities of editions. Hand-painted additions, egg tempera and textile interventions give individual impressions their own distinct character, exploring the boundary between a multiple and a unique work of art.

10. Gallery The41 — a new voice in the Emergent section
Emergent

Brussels-based Gallery The41 participates in the Emergent section with work by Lucy Téziers. Through its presentation, the gallery seeks to draw attention to artists who remain underrepresented at international art fairs.

An international selection in Brussels

ArtOnPaper welcomes galleries from Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Greece and Japan, among other countries.

Portuguese gallery MERAKI.IFL presents a solo exhibition by Philippe Nayer. Amsterdam-based Mini Galerie shows collages by Louis Reith, created using vintage paper and maps. Rotterdam’s ROOF-A Gallery combines works by Aline Thomassen and Charlotte Schleiffert. Copenhagen-based Formation Gallery brings together drawings by Morten Schelde and Nanna Riis Andersen, while Gallery KITAI from Tokyo returns with a presentation dedicated to Japanese artist Shinzan Kurihara.

A programme that continues the conversation

Throughout the three days of the fair, ArtOnPaper hosts conversations with art schools, cultural platforms, publishers and professionals from across the art world.

On Friday 2 October, KASK and ArtOnPaper open the programme with a conversation about curating works on paper. This is followed by a discussion organised in collaboration with Artnet, exploring how drawings are studied and valued in the digital age. ARBA concludes the day with a conversation on the relationship between drawing and space.

On Saturday 3 October, Posture Editions and ArtLead discuss how publications and editions can allow art to circulate in different ways. The programme also includes conversations organised in collaboration with Le Quotidien de l’Art and one., the latter focusing on the question of how people gain access to the art market.

On Sunday 4 October, conversations with La Cambre and Tropical Papers follow. For Tropical Papers, artists Felipe Mujica and Antonio Vega Macotela will be joined in conversation by curator and founder María Inés Rodríguez. A conversation organised in collaboration with ArtCircles is also planned, with further details to be announced.

A selection committee bringing together diverse perspectives

The selection committee supports the artistic direction in choosing the participating galleries. It consists of María Inés Rodríguez, curator and director of the Fondation Walter & Nicole Leblanc; Pierre Bismuth, artist and filmmaker; Sabine Taevernier, art expert and specialist in the work of James Ensor; Anne Pontégnie, independent curator and co-founder of WIELS; Fabian Kluth, collector and founder of one.; and Anne-Shelton Aaron, a long-standing supporter of European contemporary art institutions.
